New device traps particulates, kills airborne pathogens

Jan. 31, 2013 ? A new device called a soft x-ray electrostatic precipitator protected immunocompromised mice from airborne pathogenic bacteria, viruses, ultrafine particles, and allergens, according to a paper published online ahead of print in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology. This device, known for short as a SXC ESP, is highly versatile, with multiple potential uses, and Washington University is working on licensing the technology.

"Small particles are difficult to remove, and our device overcomes that barrier," says Pratim Biswas of Washington University, St. Louis. The device not only captures particles with a high level of efficiency that has never before been achieved; it also inactivates them. Even bioterror agents are blocked and completely inactivated, says Biswas.

The range of potential uses includes indoor protection of susceptible populations, such as people with respiratory illness or inhalation-induced allergies, and young children; protection of buildings from bio-terror attack; protection of individuals in hospital surgical theaters, for example, during open organ surgery; protection in clean rooms for semiconductor fabrication; removal of ultrafine particles in power plants; and capture of diesel exhaust particulates, says Biswas.

The device could be used in homes, with a cost similar to that of high efficiency air cleaners, says Biswas. "But it would be much easier to operate, and much more effective," he adds. It could be added into stand-alone indoor air cleaners, or incorporated into HVAC systems in homes, offices, and even in aircraft cabins. In the study, the device exceeded standards for high efficiency articulate air filters, which must be capable of removing particles larger than 0.3 micrometers with 99.97 percent efficiency.

The SXC ESP works by placing a charge on the particles -- "which it does very effectively," says Biswas -- and then using an electrical field to trap the particles. The SXC unit then also completely inactivates biological particles, by irradiating them, and photoionizing them -- as UV light does, only more energetically.

10 Steps To Identify Your Customers And Competition

Thanks for sharing your art skills J

I wrote an article called 5 steps to turn your idea into a business. There was a strong response so I?m going to further elaborate by posting an article on each of the 5 steps. Today?s post is about validated learning:

Put the squeeze on your idea

If you don?t, someone else will and it?ll end up costing a small fortune. It?s so easy to fall victim to an overly optimistic perspective that I recommend strategically identifying a small circle of friends that are pessimistic. This isn?t the group you surround yourself with on a regular basis. This is the group you present your ideas to and they do what they do best; shoot holes in your idea like it?s swiss cheese.

It?s important to remember not to take offense during this feedback process. We tend to hold our ideas (read: dreams) close to our chest and when a third party shoots it down it?s the equivalent of a sucker punch. Remind yourself that their criticism is improving your idea and they have your best interest at heart. If you can get this circle of friends to concur then you?re on the right path.

Create a framework to analyze your competitors

  • Business Name
  • Geo specific or online
  • Domain Name
  • Social presence
  • Executive leadership
  • Funding & partnerships
  • Purpose and mission
  • Products, services & pricing
  • Key differentiators
  • Accolades and trade associations

Use Microsoft Excel or Google Docs. Now that you have your framework start conducting research.

Follow these 10 steps to identify your customers and competition:

1. Google search

Never underestimate the power of search. The internet has turned into the greatest information resource mankind has ever known. Perform a Google search for industry terms and if you?re geo specific include city and state; ie. business consultants, scottsdale business consultants, phoenix consulting firms,?Arizona?business advisers, etc.

2. Google Trends

Allows users to analyze search volume between multiple terms. One of my favorite aspects of Google Trends is it?s ability to show news related to the search term and how it affected it?s popularity.

Google-Trends-Inbound-Marketing

3. Google Alerts

This is a little gem. I use Google Alerts for multiple reasons, but for the purpose of this article I?ll keep it focused. This feature allows you to stay apprised of the latest and greatest in Google results; web, news, etc. You can setup specific queries and frequency of updates. Set it up and sit back while Google delivers the data to you. Think of it as search on demand.

Google-Alerts

4. Facebook Graph Search

I received early access to Facebook?s new Graph Search and it?s been nothing short of amazeballs. Awesome for business research and a little scary if it falls into the hands of a stalker. Sign up for an invite and the Facebook team will roll it out when you?re eligible.

Facebook-Graph-Search

5. Twitter #Discover (Hashtag search)

I know my social media?aficionados?are loving this. Imagine a place where you can get hashtag happy and no one criticizes you. Imagine a place where hashtags actually serve a purpose. That place is called Twitter Discover and it does exactly that. Search for tweets by using a hashtag. ie. #ILoveHashTags found the following results:

Twitter-Discover-Hashtag-Search

?

6. Ispionage.com

Identify keywords your competitors are targeting. It?s intended purpose is for search engine marketing, but it?s also a great competitor analysis tool because it displays brand strategies; keywords, niches, adcopy, etc.

7. Become the customer

Purchase the services of your competitors, attend seminars, workshops and conferences. The Las Vegas Convention Center is a great resource for industry conferences and probably the quickest way to get a pulse on your industry.

Join social media groups and forums that specialize in your niche. Befriend would-be customers and ask questions. Share frustrations, find pain points and find a way to differentiate.

8. Legal research

If you depend on any third party companies make sure you read the TOS (terms of services). I can?t stress this enough. If there is any confusion I recommend hiring a contract attorney. This can throw a wrench in your plans if you don?t do your due diligence.

9. American Community Survey

The American Community Survey (ACS) is an ongoing survey that provides data every year ? giving communities the information they need to plan investments. Information from the survey generates data that helps determine how more than $400 billion in federal and state funds are distributed. With fierce debates in Washington that may or may not kill this program I recommend gaining access to the data you need before it?s gone.

10. Bureau of Economic Analysis

Source of US economic statistics including national income and product accounts (NIPAs), gross domestic product (GDP) and related measures of national, regional, industry and international accounts.?Use this tool to identify personal income for states, counties, metropolitan areas, micropolitan areas, metropolitan divisions and combined statistical areas.

Researching competition and validating your idea is important, but it?s equally significant to focus on building your business. Don?t believe me? Take it from Bob Parsons 16 rules for success; rule #11:

?Pay attention to your competitors, but pay more attention to what you?re doing.
When you look at your competitors, remember that everything looks perfect at a distance. Even the planet Earth, if you get far enough into space, looks like a peaceful place.?

The tools listed above are resources I visit frequently. I hope it helps you in your endeavors and look forward to reading about your favorite research tools in the comment section of this blog post.

Folic Acid ‘Cancer Risk’ Played Down

http://www.dailyguideghana.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/folic-acid.jpg Worries that taking extra folic acid might increase the risk of cancer have been played down by a major study.

Following Canadian research linking the vitamin with a small rise in cancer, the study in the Lancet journal looked at data from 50,000 people.

It found no significant differences in those taking folic acid.

Taken in early pregnancy, it reduces the chances of certain birth defects and there have been calls to add it to food in the UK.

Many countries including the US and Canada, South Africa and Australia, already add folate ? also called folic acid or Vitamin B9 ? to all flour.

It is proven to reduce the number of babies born with ?neural tube defects? such as spina bifida.

One of the original reasons behind this more cautious approach in western Europe was the risk that folic acid supplementation could disguise anaemia symptoms in a small number of older people.

However, another more pressing concern was prompted by the 2007 study that found the incidence of colorectal cancer, which had been falling in the US and Canada, rose temporarily just after the vitamin was automatically added to flour.

One theory suggested that folate had boosted the growth of tiny, as-yet undetected cancers or pre-cancers, allowing them to be diagnosed earlier and giving the impression that cancer rates had increased.

Your City Is Leaking Heat, Messing With Weather Patterns

You?ve probably heard about the ?urban heat island effect.? It?s the notion that since a city?s buildings, roads and sidewalks hold on to the day?s warmth, urban areas?are hotter than the surrounding countryside.?

The heating from energy use in metropolitan areas collectively acts like a thermal mountain. It forces the air flow and thus disrupts normal air circulation.

But as it turns out, all the heat being generated from powering buildings, cars, and other human activities is not just warming things up in a metropolitan area, but thousands of miles away as well.

A new study published in the journal Nature Climate Change found that the heat thrown off by major cities along the U.S. East Coast has caused winter warming across large areas of North America. And they also noted a similar pattern in Asia, where heat waste from major population centers has resulted in warming in parts of Russia, China, and Asia.

Guang Zhang, a scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, led the study. He explained to TakePart that, ?We used a computer model for global climate developed by the National Center for Atmospheric Research. It is one of the premier global climate models in the nation and the world. After adding energy consumption as heat into the model's atmosphere, we integrate the model for hundreds of years to estimate the climatic effect of energy consumption from human activities.?

He added that while the urban heat island effect is well known and has been studied, ?We were curious whether energy use, largely from urban areas, could have a long-term climate effect. This issue has not been considered in current global climate models in climate change studies.?

While it?s known that burning fossil fuels contributes to global warming, the researchers also discovered that it appears to change air circulation patterns.

?The heating from energy use in metropolitan areas collectively acts like a thermal mountain,? said Zhang. ?It forces the air flow and thus disrupts normal air circulation. This modifies the jet stream, thereby affecting air temperature remotely. We determined the change of air circulation patterns from the computer model output of wind and atmospheric pressure fields.?

Interestingly, while the study found that some remote locations in North America and Asia heat up by as much as 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit, some parts of Europe cool off a bit.

Zhang explained it this way:

The effect of energy use on temperature at continental scales is accomplished through atmospheric circulation change. Recognizing this, we note that climatological positions of the atmospheric pressure troughs are located near the east coast of continents, pressure ridges are located near the west coast of continents. Correspondingly, the atmospheric circulation is different between North America and Europe, and thus the response to heating to the atmosphere from energy use is also different.

Looks like it?s time to start recalculating our future climate projections.

Do you think this new research will have a significant effect on climate change? Tell us in the COMMENTS.

Defense Contractors Brace For Military Spending Cuts

? Looming defense cuts are casting a long shadow over the biggest defense contracting conference on the West Coast. Nearly every session, discussion and panel at West 2013 has something to do with potential defense department cutbacks.

photo

Budget cutters could trim up to $9 billion from the Pentagon budget this year alone. In 2011, the defense budget was $530 billion.

Some observers say the defense cutbacks are part of a new reality that will continue well beyond this year. One speaker at a panel discussing the current situation said the defense department will shrink.

"Everything that looks essential, or everything that looks like it can be delayed, will be declared non-essential and will be delayed," said Kori Schake, a fellow at Stanford University's Hoover Institute. She studies military policy and defense strategy.

"And so, businesses making the case that what we do is actually essential to what the department needs to successfully do, I think is the best approach to it," said Shalke.

Companies that can be flexible and market products outside the defense industry will have the best shot at survival, according to Shalke.

Do Your Orgasms Make You Say ?Oh God!!!???? | Musings by ...

mother nature tree

The other day I listened to a research paper from a clinical sexologist who researched descriptors of ?the optimal orgasm? of people over 40 ? ?336 participants.

Before I tell you some of the her results ? think for a minute how would you describe the qualities of your optimal orgasms?? Really.? I mean it. Get out? piece of paper and write down 5 ? 10 qualities, descriptors, adjectives, phrases.? Go ahead. I?ll wait ?.

The salient descriptors from her study all had transcendent qualities ? speechless, awe inspiring, spiritual, breath-taking, amazing ? the classic ? ?Oh God!!?

So what does this mean for the average Joe (or Jane)?? And why do I care?

What was both affirming and striking was how spiritual language infiltrated so many of the descriptors.? Once again I found myself stunned by and reminded by the inherent integration of sexuality and spirituality when sexual experience of the highest pleasure is experienced.? Was this true for you as well?

When I think of those moments when I have experienced ?the thin spaces? as the Irish call it ? that moment when the boundaries between heaven and earth blur and you are suspended somewhere bathed in sacred light outside the confines of words ? I find myself remembering the birth of my children, my head on my father?s chest as he exhaled for the last time, dissolving in love-making with my beloved.? I have had these moments at two other times as well ? when my soul was tearfully begging God for insight and comfort.

So while my own experience echoed the findings of her study, once again I found myself baffled as to why we as a culture (and specifically our religious culture that prides itself in ?knowing God?) ?does not discuss the potential interface of sexual expression and transcendent communion with the sacred.? How is it that people of faith and people outside of faith both describe their optimal sexual experiences in transcendent terminology?? Those without faith or opposed to religion ? those least likely to adopt such imagery ? who have NO agenda driving their description ? who are simply using the language of ?best fit? ? perhaps even wishing it wasn?t ?so spiritual? ? how is it that they too describe great sex as a wholly physical and spiritual experience?

What a fabulous mystery!

US economy gets lift from housing, other tailwinds

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The U.S. economy is a study in contrasts.

The housing, banking and auto industries are surging back to health and that has helped push the stock market to a five-year peak. Higher prices for homes and stocks tend to make people feel wealthier and spend more.

Yet unemployment remains high and hiring modest. The end of a Social Security tax cut is shrinking already flat pay. Federal budget fights have put businesses and consumers on edge.

Balanced between those tailwinds and headwinds, the economy is struggling to accelerate. By the end of this year, though, many analysts think the tailwinds will succeed in boosting growth and fueling a more robust economy in 2014.

They're back: J. C. Penney adds sales

NEW YORK (AP) -- J.C. Penney is bringing back sales.

The struggling department store chain this week will begin adding back some of the hundreds of sales it ditched last year in hopes of luring shoppers who were turned off when the discounts disappeared, CEO Ron Johnson told The Associated Press.

Penney also plans to add price tags or signs for more than half of its merchandise to show customers how much they're saving by shopping at the chain ? a strategy used by a few other retailers. For store branded items such as Arizona, Penney will show comparison prices from competitors.

The moves are a reversal for Penney on the eve of the one-year anniversary when it vowed to almost completely get rid of the sales that Americans covet but that cut into a store's profits. The idea was to offer everyday low prices that customers could count on rather than the nearly 600 fleeting discounts, coupons and sales it once offered.

Toyota sold nearly 9.75 million vehicles last year

TOKYO (AP) -- Now it's official: Toyota is once again the world's top automaker.

Toyota Motor Corp. released its tally for global vehicle sales for last year Monday at a record 9.748 million vehicles ? a bigger number than the estimate it gave last month of about 9.7 million vehicles.

It was already clear Toyota had dethroned General Motors Co. as the Detroit-based automaker fell short, selling 9.29 million vehicles.

GM had been the top-selling automaker for more than seven decades before losing the title to Toyota in 2008.

Crucial, long-overdue BlackBerry makeover arrives

TORONTO (AP) -- The maker of the BlackBerry smartphone is promising a speedier device, a superb typing experience and the ability to keep work and personal identities separate on the same phone. It's the fruit of a crucial, long-overdue makeover for the Canadian company.

Thorsten Heins, chief executive of Research In Motion Ltd., will show off the first phone with the new BlackBerry 10 system in New York on Wednesday. A marketing campaign that includes a Super Bowl ad will accompany the long-anticipated debut. Repeated delays have left the once-pioneering BlackBerry an afterthought in the shadow of Apple's trend-setting iPhone and Google's Android-driven devices.

Now, there's some optimism. Previews of the software have gotten favorable reviews on blogs. Financial analysts are starting to see some slight room for a comeback. RIM's stock has nearly tripled to $16.18 from a nine-year low in September, though it's still nearly 90 percent below its 2008 peak of $147.

US durable goods orders rise 4.6 percent on aircraft

WASHINGTON (AP) -- U.S. demand for long-lasting manufactured goods rose sharply in December on strong gains in volatile aircraft orders. But companies slowed their orders of goods that signal investment plans, indicating manufacturing could stay choppy in 2013.

The Commerce Department said Monday that overall orders for durable goods increased 4.6 percent in December compared with November. The gains were led by a 56.4 percent increase in military aircraft orders and a 10.1 percent increase in commercial aircraft orders.

Orders rose in other major categories, including machinery, communications equipment and primary metals.

Tight inventory slows US pending home sales

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A measure of Americans who signed contracts to buy homes fell last month after reaching a 2 ?-year high in November. Sales were held back by a limited supply of available homes.

The National Association of Realtors said Monday that its seasonally adjusted index for pending home sales dropped 4.3 percent in December from November to 101.7. That's still 6.9 percent higher than a year ago.

The decline signals that sales of previously occupied homes may cool off in the coming months. There's generally a one- to two-month lag between a signed contract and a completed sale.

Yahoo's 4Q report shows more signs of progress

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Yahoo showed more signs of progress during the fourth quarter as the Internet company took advantage of higher ad prices and rising earnings from its international investments to deliver numbers that exceeded analyst forecasts.

The results announced Monday covered Yahoo's first full quarter under CEO Marissa Mayer. Yahoo Inc. lured Mayer away from Google Inc. in mid-July in its latest attempt to snap out of a funk that had depressed its revenue and stock price.

The company fared well enough in the final three months of last year to produce its first full-year gain in revenue since 2008.

Caterpillar sees uncertain 2013 after tough 4Q

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Caterpillar said on Monday that its 2013 profit could shrink if the world's economy doesn't pick up in the second half of the year, as mining companies and builders remain cautious about buying new gear.

The cloudy outlook for the year came as Caterpillar reported a fourth-quarter profit less than half as big as a year ago because of a deal in China that went bad and slower growth around most of the world.

Caterpillar Inc. is the largest maker of construction and mining equipment, so its performance rises and falls with the world's economy. It tries to predict where the economy is headed so it knows how many excavators, bulldozers and mining trucks to build.

When I was seven, my father taught me how to ride a horse. It was the most beautiful experience of my entire life.

My family still lived in the Dominican Republic then, and one day my father took a day off from work to go with me to my uncle?s farm. The horse he chose for me to ride was dark brown and her name was Susanne, but I couldn?t pronounce that, so I called her chucale, which later became my nickname.

It was a beautiful sunny, breezy day, and the green field was full of flowers. The wind was moving my curly hair and all I could hear were the birds singing. I rode Susanne while my father guided me.

?Gather the rope around her neck,? he said.

?OK, Daddy.?

I accidentally grabbed Susanne?s mane instead of the rope and she reared up. I was going to scream for help but then I realized I was pulling her hair so I let it go and she stopped. I was worried that I might fall, but I had fun, too, as though I was going up and down on a roller coaster.

?Are you having fun with Susanne?? my father asked me. He was really excited that I didn?t fall off the horse and he seemed happy.

?Her name is Chucale,? I yelled at him, rolling my eyes.

?Fine, however you want to call her. Just don?t hit her so she won?t get angry.?

I kept going in circles with Susanne until it started raining. We got wet and then my father took me inside so I wouldn?t catch a cold. My dad had taken a picture of me riding Susanne, and he wanted to give it to me but I refused to accept it.

?It?s OK, Daddy, you keep it. After all, I had a great time with Chucale and I don?t need a photo to remember this moment.?

Two years later, my father left our home and I haven?t seen him since. But I?m pretty sure he remembers that day as much as I do.

A Desert Inside

The day I went from living with both of my parents to live with only my mother, I felt like a desert, empty and like everyone had abandoned me. I was 9, and I?d arrived home early from school. The front door was open so I entered the house unnoticed. I heard my mom and dad talking in their bedroom. I couldn?t hear what they were saying, but my mother sounded as if she was about to cry so I got closer and listened.

?Why did you do this to me?? my mother asked.

?I don?t know. It was an impulse,? my father replied.

?What impulse? What are you talking about? How many times have you cheated on me?? she yelled at my father.

?Is this how much you ?love? me?? she asked. Mom started crying.

?Don?t cry,? Dad said.

?How am I supposed to tell the kids about this?? she said with a sad voice.

They stopped talking for a second but then my father said that they should divorce because he wanted to marry the other woman. He told her he was sorry for her and the kids, and that he was sorry for not telling her before.

?I?ll leave next week and when the kids ask you where am I, just tell them that Daddy found a new job and had to move to the city for a few months.?

I felt a lump rising in my throat, but if I cried, my parents would notice I was listening.

The next few days were agony. When mom told me and my siblings that our dad was leaving for a few months because he found a new ?job? in the city, my siblings believed what my mother was saying. But I knew the truth, and later I told my mom that I?d overheard their conversation.

He Never Came Back

She hugged me. She tried to deny it, but then she realized she had to be honest with me. ?Oh honey, I wish you hadn?t heard that, but things aren?t going well between Mommy and Daddy so we have to divorce,? she said in a quiet, comforting voice. She gave me a kiss on my forehead.

I felt angry but tears flooded my eyes. I rolled my eyes and they disappeared. I didn?t want to look weak in front of Mom. I wanted her to see I was a brave girl. I promised never to tell my siblings the real reason my father left.

After that, I saw my father twice and then he never came back. The last time I saw him, he took me to a park in the city of Santiago and bought me ice cream. I understood that I wasn?t going to see him frequently after that, but I never thought that was going to be the last time.

At first, my brother and sister believed what Mom said about him and his new ?job,? but soon they noticed that he didn?t keep in touch with us. They were sad but they weren?t so close to my father, so I don?t think it affected them as much as it affected me.

My sister and I talked a lot about how we felt. My sister said that she was sad that our dad had left but she said she understood that he?d found someone else and maybe that person made him happier than my mom had. She was 14, so maybe it was easier for her to take that in.

"Fruitvale," "Blood Brothers" win top awards at Sundance

PARK CITY, Utah (Reuters) - Drama film "Fruitvale" and documentary "Blood Brothers" won the top awards at the Sundance Film Festival on Saturday, giving them a big boost to reach independent movie audiences this year.

"Fruitvale," starring Octavia Spencer and Michael B. Jordan and directed by 26-year-old, first-time filmmaker Ryan Coogler," picked up the U.S. drama jury and audience awards for its "moral and social urgency."

The film is based on the true story of 22-year-old Oscar Grant, who was killed by police in Oakland, California, on New Year's Eve in 2008 and whose death sparked riots against police brutality. Movie studio The Weinstein Company purchased distribution rights for the film.

"This film had a profound impact on the audience that saw it ... this award goes out to my home in the Bay Area where Oscar Grant breathed, slept, loved, had fun and survived for 22 years," Coogler said in his acceptance speech.

Oscar-winning documentarian Davis Guggenheim awarded the U.S. documentary jury prize to "Blood Brothers," saying it shook the voting panel to their core.

The documentary follows an American man who moves to Africa and works with children suffering from HIV at an orphanage, and through his work, the children gain a voice.

"It is so encouraging for the kids ... their lives are so encouraging, and they die and no one remembers their name ... To take their story so that everyone sees it, it's so awesome," director Steve Hoover said."

Young actress Shailene Woodley, praised for her performance in "The Descendants" last year, and her co-star Miles Teller won the Special Jury acting prize in "The Spectacular Now."

Actress Lake Bell, who made her directorial debut in the U.S. drama category with quirky comedy "In A World," picked up the drama screenwriting award.

Hosted by actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who premiered his raunchy directorial debut "Don Jon's Addiction" this year, the Sundance Film Festival Awards pick winners at the top gathering for independent movies made outside of Hollywood's major studios.

"Sundance is a community of people of filmmakers and film lovers who all believe together that there's more to movies than glitz and glamour and money and the box office. In Hollywood, you can feel like a freak if you talk about movies as art, and here, you don't have that," Gordon-Levitt said.

WORLD CINEMA WINNERS

The Sundance Film Festival, now in its 35th year, is backed by Robert Redford's Sundance Institute. The 10-day gathering of the independent film industry is held in snowy Park City, Utah.

In previous years, films that win the top prizes at the Sundance Film Festival often go on to achieve Hollywood awards success as well.

Last year, mythological drama "Beasts of the Southern Wild" won the top prize at Sundance and is now nominated for four Oscars in major categories.

The award winners are voted for by special juries of industry professionals and by the audience for the audience favorite awards.

In the world cinema categories, South Korean drama "Jiseul" picked up the grand jury drama prize. The film, directed by Muel O, follows the residents of a small town who were forced to hide in a cave for 60 days after the military attacked their village.

Cambodian documentary "A River Changes Course," about three young Cambodians struggling with adversity in a country ravaged by war and debt, picked up the world cinema grand jury award.

"Events like these really bring our communities together to share in the beauty of the world and the beauty of our future," director Kalyanee Mam said.

"Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer," which follows the story of three members of a Russian feminist punk band jailed for performing a "punk prayer" in a Russian Orthodox church, picked up special jury prize in the world documentary category.

Co-director Mike Lerner said the three members of the band had "started a feminist revolution that we hope will continue around the world."

Sexual Fantasies: 'The Normal Bar' Finds Fantasy-Infidelity Link

Excerpted from the book THE NORMAL BAR. Copyright ? 2013 by Chrisanna Northrup, Pepper Schwartz, and James Witte. Published by Harmony, an Imprint of the Crown Publishing Group, a division of Random House, Inc. The Normal Bar is the world's most extensive survey on romantic relationships, polling over 100,000 people and collecting over 1 million data points. The survey was conducted in 2011 using a powerful interactive survey tool called OnQ with the help of media partners The Huffington Post, Reader's Digest, AARP, iVillage, & AOL.

According to the Normal Bar data, total fidelity of mind as well as body is the rare exception. It?s not abnormal to be tempted to stray. However, for many people, this temptation poses a moral dilemma. In Western society, men and women prize the freedom to mingle freely, yet this easy access to members of the opposite sex can raise anxiety in our partners and in ourselves. No one is policing our every movement, so we have to be responsible for our own reactions when our hormones start percolating. For some, this responsibility is a real burden.

Why are fantasies about sex outside one?s primary relationship so common? In part because lust is the key to our species? survival, as it is for most animals. Geese are the only species we know of that pair only once during a lifetime; if one mate dies, the bereft partner stays unmatched until death. This is not a great model for repopulating the species, so humans have developed a strong sex drive that isn?t limited to one partner. Being able to imagine sex with alternative partners prepares us to start over in the event of death or divorce. In a sense, then, we need those fantasies of infidelity. On the other hand, because we?ve promised to be faithful, and because we know the likely and unpleasant consequences if we break that promise, most of us constrain ourselves to looking without touching.

Sexually fantasizing about other people
Just meeting another person can arouse physical or emotional attraction. This response does not turn off just because you?re in a committed relationship. The Normal Bar shows that 61% of women and 90% of men fantasize sexually about people they meet. There?s no stopping imagination!

Supporting the premise that this is an instinctive response ? rather than a reflection on the primary relationship ? we found no correlation between the duration of a relationship and the amount of lusting that goes on outside it. After your first year as a couple, you may or may not ?lust in your heart? for others, but there?s no reason to fear that your partner is daydreaming about others just because you?ve been together so long.

More surprisingly, the Normal Bar data also show virtually no connection between fantasies of infidelity and happiness in the core relationship. Temptation happens; it doesn?t matter if you are unhappy or happy with your main squeeze.

Sex with anybody you wanted for one night
Still in the realm of fantasy, we wondered what some of the secret yearnings of men and women would be if there were no negative consequences for their sexual trespasses. So we asked, ?If you had the opportunity to have sex with anybody you wanted outside your current relationship and it would have zero effect on your current relationship or family, as if it never happened, would you do it?? Men went for this fantasy by a ratio of three to two over women! Two- thirds of men (65%) and just under half of women (43%) found this a compelling proposition.

This suggests that many of us harbor a secret longing for sexual adventure and romance, even if we never act on it. We don?t want these attractions to undermine our relationship or our moral commitments, but still... we can?t help thinking about that attractive new colleague at the company picnic.

Given the normalcy of these fantasies, we also wondered if our respondents thought their partners would have sex with somebody else if given the same free pass. The responses were remarkably accurate. Men were spot-on, with 43% of men predicting their partners would go for it; and 58% of women thought their mates would seize the opportunity.

It?s one thing to be offered a ?freebie,? however, and another to actually plan, invite, or agree to sex outside the relationship. Some couples joke that each has given the other permission have sex with some cherished movie star (think: Sting, Katy Perry, George Clooney, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Charlize Theron, Taylor Lautner), but would that really happen if the unlikely encounter occurred? And what about going beyond fantasy with that new colleague at the picnic in spite of the repercussions? This is where extreme sexual dissatisfaction can make a difference in the response. Among our dissatisfied couples, 79% of men and 65% of women said they?d jump at the chance to have sex with somebody new for one night. People who are starving are more tempted to eat, even if it?s ?forbidden fruit.? But having a very good sex life isn?t a total safeguard; 53% of men and 28% of women who are fully satisfied with sex at home are still interested in the seductive stranger or Hollywood icon.

Would you consider sex outside your relationship with somebody who propositioned you?
We are now leaving the world of fantasy and looking at real reactions to actual opportunities. Not all temptation is in the eye of the beholder. Sometimes it takes the form of an overt proposition from the one beheld. And what happens then? Nearly half (48%) of women and two-thirds (69%) of men told us that if they were actually propositioned by someone they were attracted to outside their relationships they?d be tempted to act on it. It?s a good thing people aren?t more sexually forward, or we might have a lot more infidelity!

The Normal Bar does show that people who are more sexually satisfied are less likely to be tempted to have sex outside the relationship, but our overall finding here is that more overt invitations would equal more cheating. The best way to stay monogamous may be to keep your partner close when entrancing alternatives are near.

Stay tuned for more excerpts from The Normal Bar in the coming weeks.

Stephen King writes post-Newtown essay on guns

BANGOR, Maine (AP) ? Horror writer Stephen King is seeking to provoke a discussion on gun control and gun rights following the school shooting massacre in Newtown, Conn.

The Maine native is a gun owner. He calls for three "reasonable measures" to curb gun violence in an essay titled "Guns," released Friday as a Kindle single through Amazon.

King says he wants background checks on all gun sales and bans on high-capacity magazines and military-style weapons like the rifle used in the Newtown shooting, which killed 20 children and six school officials.

King describes a pattern of mass shootings in which anger and frustration give way to political rhetoric before discussions of gun control "disappear into the legislative swamp." He says on his website: "If this helps provoke constructive debate, I've done my job."

Science needs a second opinion: Researchers find flaws in study of patients in 'vegetative state'

Jan. 24, 2013 ? A team of researchers led by Weill Cornell Medical College is calling into question the published statistics, methods and findings of a highly publicized research study that claimed bedside electroencephalography (EEG) identified evidence of awareness in three patients diagnosed to be in a vegetative state.

The new reanalysis study led by Weill Cornell neurologists Drs. Andrew Goldfine,Jonathan Victor, and Nicholas Schiff, published in the Jan. 26 issue of the journal Lancet, reports the statistical results and methodology used by a research team led by University of Western Ontario scientists and published online Nov. 9, 2011, also in the Lancet, was flawed in a number of crucial ways. Due to these errors, the reanalysis concludes it is impossible to determine whether or not these vegetative state study subjects demonstrated any degree of awareness during the testing.

The University of Western Ontario researchers in the original study set out to use bedside EEG technology to identify any changes in brain activity in vegetative patients and also healthy subjects as controls. During the study, each subject was asked to either imagine moving their hand or foot each time they heard an electronic beep. The brain activity following hand or foot commands was recorded using EEG and then compared in the study. The published study claimed that three of the 16 tested vegetative patients successfully performed the task, along with 9 of the 12 healthy controls. The reanalysis of this study is important, the Weill Cornell researchers say, because if the method was indeed valid, it would mark an important breakthrough in the field -- the first evidence using a bedside testing method that patients reported to be in a vegetative state could perform high-level cognitive tasks.

"Sadly, our reanalysis of the research team's original data shows these particular methods do not work, and it is important that scientists, physicians, and most importantly, the families of severely brain injured patients understand that the conclusions reached in the original study were most likely due to chance findings," says the corresponding author of the reanalysis, Dr. Schiff, the Jerold B. Katz Professor of Neurology and Neuroscience, professor of neuroscience in the Feil Family Brain and Mind Research Institute and professor of public health at Weill Cornell.

"We see the urgency and need every single day for tests that can be used to help establish awareness and consciousness in brain injured patients. However we won't help patients or their families by using a flawed research method and data that cannot accurately provide the information we are all hoping to find," says Dr. Schiff, who is also a neurologist at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

"The reanalysis points to the importance of the peer review process, data sharing and analytic tools to confirm research findings, especially those which are biologically complex and where misinterpretation could have major implications on clinical practice," says study co-author Dr. Joseph J. Fins, the E. William Davis Jr., MD Professor of Medical Ethics and chief of the Division of Medical Ethics at Weill Cornell, and director of medical ethics at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell. "EEG techniques are an inexpensive and portable method of assessment, and a premature endorsement and dissemination of this technique could provide families with false hope about whether patients thought to be vegetative are in fact conscious," says Dr. Fins.

"Methods Have Consequences"

This reanalysis study by Weill Cornell and its colleagues from Burke Medical Research Institute and the University of Li?ge was made possible by a data-sharing agreement between their research group and the authors of the original study, Dr. Damian Cruse, Dr. Adrian Owen and colleagues from the University of Western Ontario. The Weill Cornell, University of Liege and the University of Western Ontario investigators are jointly supported by a multicenter research grant from the James S. McDonnell Foundation.

"We set out to validate the original Lancet study findings about EEG, not disprove them, because it is critically important that tests purporting to assert the presence of consciousness be carefully vetted by peer-review," says senior author Dr. Victor, the Fred Plum Professor of Neurology and professor of neuroscience in the Feil Family Brain and Mind Research Institute at Weill Cornell and a neurologist at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell.

The reanalysis study doesn't criticize the use of bedside EEG technology for detection of consciousness, but questions the appropriateness of the statistical methodology applied to the data, Dr. Victor explained. The Weill Cornell research team's main finding was that the original study failed to take into account several aspects of EEG signals present in the vegetative patients who were said to show awareness -- including the contamination of the EEG signals with muscle activity and the random characteristics of the EEG over extended periods of time, he says. Also, basic task-related EEG signals observed in the healthy subjects were not identifiable in any of the vegetative patients.

"The false-positive EEG brain activity responses in vegetative patients may have been reported because of flawed statistical methods, a problem that was exacerbated because a large number of statistical features were extracted from a small amount of data," says lead author Dr. Goldfine, assistant professor of neurology at the Burke Medical Research Institute, a neurologist at New York Presbyterian /Weill Cornell and Burke Rehabilitation Hospital. "Our reanalysis showed that because of the statistical assumptions and methodology used in the original study, random phenomena could be misinterpreted as a 'response'."

In addition to identifying flaws in the statistical approach used in the original study, the Weill Cornell research team also reanalyzed the original data with methodologies that take into account the presence of contamination of EEG data by muscle activity artifact, and the kind of randomness that EEG signals manifest over time. "But critically, the data from the vegetative subjects showed no changes indicative of consciousness or command following. Our analysis only revealed random fluctuations of brain activity," says Dr. Goldfine, who is also an assistant professor of neuroscience in the Feil Family Brain and Mind Research Institute at Weill Cornell.

"This reanalysis study shows methods have consequences," says Dr. Fins. "This is really difficult science, and we must do everything in our power to work together, to share our data and methods and peer review it, so that we can reach our goal of properly defining consciousness in severely brain injured patients."

The study's other co-authors include: Jonathan Bardin, a neuroscience graduate student at Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences, and Dr. Quentin Noirhomme of the Coma Science Group, Cyclotron Research Centre and Neurology Department at the University and University Hospital of Li?ge, in Li?ge, Belgium.

Reserva's Ad's Really Footing Of A $20000 Robbery - Business Insider

Getting $20,000 worth of merchandise stolen right before Christmas is pretty awful. That's why Brazilian menswear store Reserva decided to make metaphorical lemonade out of its lemons and incorporate footage of the December 6 robbery into its newest ad campaign.

"They stole my clothes and we stole their image," owner Rony Meisler told?O Globo newspaper.

The ad, dubbed "Limonada," reads, "There's no need to break the store window. Just go in! Reserva sale: Up to 40% off... Hurry up! Because there are people doing crazy things for Reserva."

If you think Brazilian menswear store Reserva's new ad campaign?featuring a full-blown robbery? looks pretty realistic, that's because it is.

The GOLD PRICE lost $13.10 today to close near the low at $1,656.40. Silver lost 51.5 cents to 3118c.

The silver and GOLD PRICE are not at a point -- $1,655 and 3100c -- where they must either catch or fall further, to $1,640 and 2975c.

Clearly, jumping over $1,700 will take some work.

Looking at it through the optimist's lens, today's gold retreat did no more than take gold down for a final kiss good-bye to the downtrend line from the high from mid-November. That's $1,656. Final kiss good-bye, I remind y'all, occurs after a market breaks through resistance, peaks, then corrects and touches back to that resistance line before it once again takes off.

I've been through these long soul-harrowing times before. You think metals have begun to take off again, only to disappoint you again. It can last a long time. Why shouldn't silver and gold go lower? The low on 4 January was too complete from a lot of angles. Most likely outcome will see silver and gold trading sideways next week, then attempting that $1,700 mark in a week or two.

Y'all think this is bad because you weren't watching the gold and SILVER PRICE in October and November 2008. Gold dropped 32% from its 2008 peak and silver gave up 105% of its preceding gain. Brutal, but by no means the end of the bull market. From an 880 cent and $704.50 low silver and gold rallied for 3 years. As I keep on telling y'all, the bull is always working to shake off as many riders as possible.

Wise words for today: "Keep about your work. Do not flinch because the lion roars. Do not stop to stone the devil's dogs. Do not fool away your time chasing the devil's rabbits. Do your work."

Again today stocks reached new high closes for the move. Dow added 45.42 (0.33%) to 13,870.75 while the S&P500 moved about the same, up 5.85 (0.39%) to 1,500.67. That close over 1,500 offers big round number support to morale, and never mind that it's only 2/3 of a point over 1,500.

Should you take a ruler and draw a line across the 12,875 Dow high in May 2011, the 13,238 in May 2012, and the October 2013 high at 13,662, you have an upward slope that defines the upper Jaw of Death, the upper boundary of a broadening top. (Lower boundary runs from May 2011 at 12,876 through 12,035 in June 2012.) Against that backdrop, within those Jaws of Death, all the present stock rally is playing out. Keep that in mind. (S&P500 backdrop is about the same.)

It is possible the Dow might punch through that upper jaw and reach for the 14,000 high made in October 2007. Witnessing against that is a VERY overbought RSI (75.69 today when 70 is overbought), more so than it was in 2007. MACD -- market's distance above its moving averages -- isn't quite that bad, but strongly overbought.

Stocks have also traded in a rising wedge since November, and the last three days have taken them above that wedge's point. Generally a rising wedge resolves by dropping. Stocks have also risen 8 days running.

It's also possible that stocks will break here for a correction, then renew their rise into March before their final breakdown, assuming that the next one isn't the big one.

But in the teeth of all the Fed's manipulation and the President's Plunge Protection Team and all the twitching and tweaking they can do, stocks are locked in a primary down trend (bear market), and those who have been seduced into believing that a new bull market is arrived and Dow 36,000 lies just around the corner will be undeceived in dust, sackcloth, ashes, weeping and wailing.

Dow in gold has broken above resistance and has an upward target of about 9.12 oz (G$188.53). Today it stands at 8.39 oz (G$173.44). Dow in silver was trying to break down but last two days has rallied no, gapped, above the 200 DMA and the 20 DMA and penetrated the downtrend line. Target here is about 475 oz, from today's 445.3.

US dollar index has a tee-tiny uptrend working, but today lost 23.7 basis points (0.3%) to 79.748. Euro finally burst through $1.3400 resistance to $1,3460, up 0.64%. Target now becomes $1.3486, the Feb. 2012 high. Yen made ANOTHER new low for the move today at 109.98 (-0.69%). I reckon you could take a sauna in the offices of the Federal Reserve and the ECB today, they are so mad at the Japanese for their jawboning competitive devaluation. Lower the yen falls, more it steams the other central banks. I reckon the proverb is true, there is no honor among theives.

To avoid confusion, please remember that the comments above have a very short time horizon. Always invest with the primary trend. Gold's primary trend is up, targeting at least $3,130.00; silver's primary is up targeting 16:1 gold/silver ratio or $195.66; stocks' primary trend is down, targeting Dow under 2,900 and worth only one ounce of gold; US$ or US$-denominated assets, primary trend down; real estate bubble has burst, primary trend down.

WARNING AND DISCLAIMER. Be advised and warned:

Do NOT use these commentaries to trade futures contracts. I don't intend them for that or write them with that short term trading outlook. I write them for long-term investors in physical metals. Take them as entertainment, but not as a timing service for futures.

NOR do I recommend investing in gold or silver Exchange Trade Funds (ETFs). Those are NOT physical metal and I fear one day one or another may go up in smoke. Unless you can breathe smoke, stay away. Call me paranoid, but the surviving rabbit is wary of traps.

NOR do I recommend trading futures options or other leveraged paper gold and silver products. These are not for the inexperienced.

NOR do I recommend buying gold and silver on margin or with debt.

What DO I recommend? Physical gold and silver coins and bars in your own hands.

One final warning: NEVER insert a 747 Jumbo Jet up your nose. No, I don't.
