Georges St-Pierre?s camp says he beat Nick Diaz with an injured Achilles tendon

The UFC gave a backstage look at Georges St-Pierre's win over Nick Diaz at UFC 158, complete with an adorable shot at the end of GSP high-fiving a young fan who was dressed like the champ from head to toe.

According the GSP's trainer, Firas Zahabi, it's a fight the UFC welterweight champion went through with despite an injury. Zahabi said GSP injured his Achilles tendon during training for the fight, and it may have worsened during the bout.

"I was worried it would tear during the fight," Zahabi told MMAFighting.com. "We had to cut his last sparring [session] short due to his injury. He had a week to rest it and then the fight."

Does finding out that GSP was injured changed your opinion of his performance? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Study could aid development of new drugs to treat gout

Wednesday, March 20, 2013

Findings from a Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine study could lead to the development of new drugs to treat gout.

The study, led by Liang Qiao, MD, and his colleagues and collaborators, was published March 19 in the journal Nature Communications.

Gout is caused by a buildup of uric acid around joints, typically the big toe, knee or ankles. The immune system revs up to attack uric acid salt crystals, and this immune response causes painful inflammation.

The innate immune response is mainly activated by calcium that enters a macrophage immune cell through an opening called the calcium channel. There are several types of calcium channels. Researchers found that a particular type of calcium channel, called TRPM2, is responsible for initiating the immune response. (TRPM2 stands for transient receptor potential melastatin 2.)

In lab mice, study collaborators from Japan knocked out a gene that is responsible for this calcium channel. Qiao's team then exposed these "knockout" mice and a comparison group of normal mice to uric acid salt crystals and to a liposome, a compound that also causes inflammation. They found that inflammation was significantly lower in the knockout mice that lacked the TRPM2 calcium channel. They therefore concluded that disabling the TRPM2 calcium channel could be key to reducing painful inflammation from gout.

The next step will be to design a compound that would block the TRPM2 calcium channel, and then test how well this compound reduces inflammation in an animal model.

The study's findings might also apply to Alzheimer's disease and arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). These two diseases, like gout, have been linked to inflammation. And it is possible that the TRPM2 calcium channel may be key to initiating the inflammatory response in these two diseases as well. But this has not been proven yet, Qiao said.

The study also could aid in the development of new vaccines. Researchers elsewhere are studying whether liposomes could serve as more effective adjuvants in new vaccines. (An adjuvant is the component in a vaccine that stimulates the immune system to attack a pathogen such as a virus or bacterium). The Loyola study found that only liposomes with either a positive or a negative electric charge are effective in stimulating the immune system.

Liposomes with a neutral charge did not stimulate the immune system.

Qiao, senior author of the study, is a professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. Co-authors of the study are Zhenyu Zhong (first author, significant contributor), Yougang Zhai, Shuang Liang and Renzhi Han, all of Loyola University Chicago; Yasou Mori of Kyoto University in Japan; and Fayyaz S. Sutterwala of the University of Iowa.

Eric Schmidt says Google Now for iOS hinges upon Apple

Google Now for iOS leak

Sometimes, it's what you don't say that matters. When asked at Google's Big Tent Summit about when Google Now might show on the iPhone, the company's Eric Schmidt told a questioner that he'll "need to discuss that with Apple," and that there was no certainty Apple would approve what Google sent. Conspicuously non-committal? You bet -- but the statement also suggests that a Google Now release is just a question of whether or not Apple gives the thumbs up, not whether the iOS port exists at all. We'd add that the remarks sound eerily familiar. Schmidt was saying similar things about Apple's responsibility when he downplayed the odds of a stand-alone Google Maps release for iOS, and we all know how that turned out. Skip forward to about 17:50 in the video at the source link for Schmidt's own words.

It?s All in the Nerves: How to Really Treat Depression

Exercise, Prozac and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) may ultimately relieve depression in the same way.

That?s what the latest research, conducted on mice, suggests, and the scientists are encouraged that similar processes are at work in the human brain as well. According to the findings, published in the journals Cell Stem Cell and Molecular Psychiatry, all of these therapies can spur the growth of brain cells. And it seems that such neurogenesis, which perhaps results from changes in levels of brain chemicals like serotonin, can lift the symptoms of depression.

Since the mid-1990s, researchers have been piecing together a theory of depression that accounts for the seemingly disparate triggers of the mental illness, as well as the variety of treatments that seem to counteract the negative mood.

And so far, this is what they believe: extreme or uncontrollable stress, particularly early in life, can lead to excessive release of the neurotransmitter glutamate in the brain.? At these high levels, glutamate can damage or even kill certain cells in the hippocampus, a region known for its role in memory.? This can lead to a thinning of the neural network in this area, which contributes to depression for reasons that are not yet clear. But antidepressant treatments all seem to promote the birth of new brain cells in that part of the brain.

Moreover, ?It?s not just growth of new nerve cells [in this region],? says Bruce McEwen, professor of neuroscience at Rockefeller University,??There?s also plasticity of nerve cells all over the brain? that is ongoing and can be facilitated or blocked.? ?These changes may start in the hippocampus, where new cells can be born, but older cells can be revitalized elsewhere as well, perhaps even changing the circuit of nerve activity that keeps people stuck in depressive thoughts and feelings.

MORE:?Antidepressants: Are They Effective or Just a Placebo?

Now, Hongjun Song, professor of neurology and neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University, documents how disparate treatments, from exercise to antidepressants that manipulate serotonin levels, and even electrical stimulation of certain brain regions, can ultimately trigger this nerve growth that fights depression.

The brain must maintain a delicate balance, with complex chains of signals keeping various opposing processes in check.? One protein that stymies the growth of brain cells, sFRP3, is useful in controlling cell growth from getting out of hand, but could be harmful if it hampers necessary growth. Working with mice, Song and his colleagues showed that antidepressant medications, ECT and exercise all affect levels of sFRP3.

?If you treat with different classes of antidepressants or ECT, they all lead to changes in expression of sFRP3,? says Song, who studied Prozac (fluoxetine), a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and imipramine, an antidepressant in another class of drugs called tricyclics, which regulate multiple neurotransmitters.? The research showed that these drugs reduced levels of sFRP3 levels in the hippocampus, which allowed new cells and connections to grow.

To further confirm the effect of sFRP3 on depression, Song and his colleagues also genetically engineered mice without the sFRP3 protein; these animals were less likely to show depressive responses when they were forced to swim until exhaustion, an indication that they were less prone to experiencing the negative mood state.

The research also found that in human patients, genes associated with the protein affected how long it took depressed people to respond to medication. Taken together, the latest data suggests that presence of elevated levels of sFRP3 protein may increase vulnerability to depression by preventing new nerve cells from growing in the hippocampal region.?Similarly, mice given ECT, and those that exercised regularly, also showed lower levels of sFRP3.

MORE:?Ketamine: Leading the Way Toward Fast-Acting Antidepressants

So how do things as different as ECT, drugs and exercise change the same protein? They all?affected a single type of cell in?the hippocampus, known as granule cells.? ?What matters is that you want to activate [these] granule cells,? says Song.??If the animals do running, that leads to firing of those neurons,? he says, explaining that all of the other treatments did so as well.

Further studies are needed to confirm whether consistently high levels of the protein increase the likelihood of depression in human patients, but if that?s the case, then activating granule cells, by way of suppressing the release of sFRP3, might be a promising new way of treating depression. So far, ?no drugs are known [to affect it directly],? says Song, ?The next step is trying to find an approach where we can modulate the function of sFRP3 as an antidepressant.?

Supreme Court upholds sale of used textbooks

The millions of Americans who sell used items on eBay and at garage sales, flea markets or church raffles got a big victory Tuesday in the U.S. Supreme Court.

The court ruled that copyrighted items made overseas -- and that includes not only books but also CDs, DVDs, computers, watches and anything else with copyrighted material in it -- are covered by a federal law that says a person who buys such a product is free to turn around and sell it.

The ruling came in a case involving Supap Kirtsaeng, a student from Thailand who was surprised by the high cost of academic textbooks when he arrived in the U.S. to attend c ollege. He asked his parents to search bookstores back home and send him much cheaper English language versions -- published overseas and sold at a fraction of the price -- of the same texts.

He was soon running what amounted to a small business out of his apartment, helping to pay his way through school by selling textbooks on eBay. The exact amount of his profit is unclear, but court records say it was around $100,000.

The publisher of some of the books he sold, John Wiley & Sons, sued him in federal court, and a New York jury ordered him in 2009 to pay $600,000 in damages. When he said he had nowhere near that kind of money, he had to hand over personal property, including his computer, printer and golf clubs. A federal appeals court upheld the verdict.

A law known as the the first-sale doctrine says if you buy the latest novel, you can then sell it on a website or give it away to the church library without violating copyright laws. A who's who of companies and groups involved in selling used merchandise had urged the Supreme Court to rule that the doctrine applied to goods made overseas.

The court ruled 6-3 that it does. The opinion, written by Justice Stephen Breyer, said that's what Congress intended and that's what the law has long been understood to mean.

"Reliance upon the 'first sale' doctrine is deeply embedded in the practices of those, such as booksellers, libraries, museums, and retailers, who have long relied upon its protection," Breyer wrote.

A contrary ruling, he said, "would prevent the resale of, say, a car, without the permission of the holder of each piece of copyrighted automobile software."

EBay warned that a ruling in favor of the publisher would have been a blow to "trade, consumers, secondary markets, e-commerce, small businesses and jobs." Goodwill Industries said such an outcome would have had "a catastrophic effect on the viability of the secondary market and, consequently, on Goodwill's ability to provide needed community-based services."

"There are enough copyright owners out there -- and enough crazy copyright lawsuits," said a group of book store operators in a friend of court brief. "No one should be put to the choice of violating the law and hoping they don't get caught, and losing their business."

The Software & Information Industry Association, the principal trade association for the software and digital content industries, said in a statement that it is "strongly disappointed" by the ruling.

"Today?s decision will create a strong disincentive for publishers to market different versions and sell copies at different prices in different regions," the statement said. "The practical result may very well be that consumers and students abroad will see dramatic price increases or entirely lose their access to valuable U.S. resources created specifically for them.

?American publishers will face direct harm, because our markets will be open to a flood of copyrighted material that was intended for purchase overseas. By exploiting pricing models that are meant for students in undeveloped nations, importers both deny those students a full education, and threaten American publishers? ability to do business abroad.?

Fallon reportedly replacing Leno, moving to NY

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? As Jay Leno lobs potshots at ratings-challenged NBC in his "Tonight" monologues, speculation is swirling the network is taking steps to replace the host with Jimmy Fallon next year and move the show from Burbank to New York.

NBC confirmed Wednesday it's creating a new studio for Fallon in New York, where he hosts "Late Night." But the network did not comment on a report that the digs at its Rockefeller Plaza headquarters may become home to a transplanted, Fallon-hosted "Tonight."

The New York Times reported the plan in a Wednesday story, citing unidentified network executives. The Hollywood Reporter had a March 1 report about a Fallon-Leno switch, which was denied by the network.

Looming over NBC is its messy, failed effort to replace Leno with Conan O'Brien, which ended in 2010 with Leno regaining "Tonight" and NBC losing O'Brien ? who got a $45 million exit deal ? to TBS. Leno's current "Tonight" contract expires in September of 2014.

That occurred under a different regime, before NBCUniversal was taken over by Philadelphia-based Comcast Corp., which has a reputation for discipline. While NBC dithered and backtracked on its "Tonight" succession plan involving O'Brien, Comcast is likely to be more decisive.

"I don't know if it's possible to have a less orderly transition than Leno-O'Brien," said analyst Brad Adgate of media-buying firm Horizon Media.

Fallon contacted Leno in an effort to help smooth the potential switch, according to a Hollywood Reporter story Wednesday.

The latest roiling of the late-night waters began in January when ABC moved "Jimmy Kimmel Live" back to 11:35 p.m. Eastern to offer direct competition to Leno and CBS' David Letterman.

With the potential for Kimmel, 45, to draw advertiser-favored young viewers away from Leno (62) and Letterman (65), it's unsurprising that their networks might step up their succession planning.

At 38, Fallon is the youngest of the pack.

Leno, who took over "Tonight" from Johnny Carson in 1992, did not respond Wednesday to a request for comment. But he might be taking advantage of other ways to communicate ? the "Tonight" stage and its audience of millions.

Although late-night hosts are known for needling their network bosses on-air, the timing of Leno's latest jabs at NBC seemed to make the network particularly uncomfortable. They reportedly asked him to stop; he hasn't.

"You know the whole legend of St. Patrick, right? St. Patrick drove all the snakes out of Ireland ? and then they came to the United States and became NBC executives," Leno joked on Monday's show.

On Tuesday, he played off a news report about a Serbian woman with a rare brain condition that causes her to see the world upside down: "Isn't that crazy? It's unbelievable. She sees everything upside down. In fact, she thinks NBC is at the top of the ratings."

Leno, who briefly moved to prime-time to make room for O'Brien, has proved himself a wily survivor. Despite the challenge from Kimmel, he and "Tonight" have remained top-rated so far.

But if a change is destined, NBC could be eying next year's Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, as a premium launch pad for a revamped "Tonight," analyst Adgate said.

"If they're going to do it, it makes sense to do it when NBC is dominating television for 17 days," he said, and can heavily promote the "Tonight" switch. "They could have Fallon in Sochi, talking it up."

In the April issue of GQ magazine, "Late Night" producer Lorne Michaels ("Saturday Night Live") said a transition to Fallon had "an inevitability to it," adding that he was the closest to Carson that I've seen of this generation."

Global rise in type 1 diabetes may be linked to reduced exposure to pathogens in early life

Mar. 19, 2013 ? Countries with lower mortality from infectious disease exhibit higher rates of type 1 diabetes, according to a new study by Dr. A. Abela and Professor S. Fava of the University of Malta. The findings, collating data from three major international studies and presented at the Society for Endocrinology annual conference in Harrogate UK, suggest that the as yet unexplained global rise in type 1 diabetes may be linked to reduced exposure to pathogens in early life.

Type 1 diabetes is caused when the immune system destroys the cells of the pancreas that release insulin, leaving the patient unable to control his own blood sugar. It is estimated to affect around half a million children worldwide, increasing in incidence by an estimated 3% every year. This increase is well documented and is linked to the developed world, but is so far unexplained -- various theories put forward include the 'hygiene hypothesis', which suggests that encounters between the developing immune system and micro-organisms such as bacteria and parasites are part of human evolution and may therefore protect against the development of auto-immunity.

The researchers investigated whether markers of infectious disease burden could be linked to the local incidence of type 1 diabetes. They used data from the World Health Organisation (WHO) DiaMond Project, WHO global burden of disease: 2004 update, and the Alexander Project, to correlate type 1 diabetes incidence by country with mortality from infectious disease and bacterial antibiotic susceptibility (which indicates antibiotic use and thus exposure to bacterial infection).

Type 1 diabetes rates were highest in countries with low mortality from infectious disease. This was true for total mortality from infectious disease (r=-0.35, p=0.008), as well as deaths caused specifically by diarrhea, respiratory disease, tuberculosis, and infections and parasitic disease (all p<0.05). They also found type 1 diabetes rates are significantly associated with the local susceptibility of the bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae to all antibiotics studied.

This study suggests that there may be an association between type 1 diabetes rates and infectious disease burden. It is possible that the increasing global incidence of type 1 diabetes may be linked to lack of exposure to pathogens during early life. Whilst the data provide support for the hygiene hypothesis they do not prove it: the rise in type 1 diabetes rates is a complex problem and this study is of association only. Other potential contributing factors may show a similar geographical variation to infectious disease burden, as this is linked to the developed world. The authors are keen to use further studies to identify other environmental factors which may predispose to type 1 diabetes.

Study leader Professor Stephen Fava, Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology at Mater Dei Hospital, Malta & Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Malta, said:

"The global rise in type 1 diabetes is an unexplained phenomenon. Many suggest that the exposure, or rather the lack of exposure, to infectious disease when young might be linked to the development of autoimmunity.

"Our data show that type 1 diabetes rates were highest in countries where markers of exposure to infectious disease were lowest. Incidence of type 1 diabetes was significantly linked to mortality from a variety of infectious diseases and to the local susceptibility of a common bacterium to antibiotics.

"These data provide support for the notion that the immune system can somehow become disordered and attack the body's own cells if it is not trained by regular exposure to micro-organisms -- the so called hygiene hypothesis. More research is needed to try to identify other environmental factors that may be linked to the continuing conundrum of rising type 1 diabetes rates."

Rockefeller impostor on trial for murder

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? After 27 years, the murder trial of a man who posed as a member of the fabled Rockefeller family is getting under way with opening statements to the jury.

Seven women and five men were selected to as the jury to begin hearing the case Monday of Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter (GAYR'-hahrtz-ry-tur). He was known for 20 years as Clark Rockefeller. He says he is not guilty of the cold case killing of John Sohus.

Sohus disappeared with his wife, Linda, in 1985 while Gerhartsreiter was a tenant at the home of Sohus' mother.

The prosecution's case is circumstantial, based on a bag of bones found buried at the property and fuzzy memories of San Marino residents who knew the defendant.

The defense says there was no motive for the defendant to kill anyone. Linda Sohus vanished without a trace.

Show mercy, don't rush to condemn, new pope urges

By Philip Pullella

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Francis, speaking to an overflow crowd of more than 150,000 in St Peter's Square, urged the world on Sunday to be more forgiving and merciful and not so quick to condemn other people's failures.

"A little bit of mercy makes the world less cold and more just," he told the cheering crowd from the window of the papal apartments overlooking the square.

Four days after his election, the former Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina spoke both as pope and as parish priest -earlier he said Mass for a few hundred Vatican workers in a tiny church just inside the city-state's walls.

Chants of "Francesco, Francesco, Francesco," the pope's name in Italian, reverberated through the square and down a long boulevard leading to the Tiber River.

Since his election on Wednesday as the first non-European pope in nearly 1,300 years, Francis has signaled a sharp change of style from his more aloof predecessor, Benedict, and laid out a clear moral path for the 1.2-billion-member Church, which is beset by scandals, intrigue and strife.

"Brothers and sisters, good morning," he said, using a familiar style that has already become his hallmark.

He wove his address from the window as well as his earlier homily around the Gospel story of the crowd that wanted to stone a woman who had committed adultery but was saved by Jesus.

Jesus told them "let he among you who is without sin, cast the first stone" and then told the woman "go and sin no more".

"I think even we are sometimes like these people, who on the one hand want to listen to Jesus, but on the other hand, sometimes we like to stone others and condemn others. The message of Jesus is this: mercy," he said at the morning Mass.

"I came because I love this pope," said Anna Barone, an elderly woman from southern Italy as she craned her neck to get a glimpse of him.

"I hope this means a better future for the Church. He seems to have good intentions. I hope they let him make changes. The Church must be poor in spirit, not just in material goods. It has to get closer to the people. I am very hopeful," she said.

In a sign of appreciation that he had taken his name from St. Francis of Assisi, who preached to animals and defended nature, a group held up a banner reading: "Animal lovers and animals thank the pope".

BE OPEN TO MERCY

In both his address and homily, the pope said people should be open to God's mercy, even those who have committed grave sins.

"The Lord never tires of forgiving, never! It is we who tire of asking for forgiveness," he said at the Mass.

The crowd in the square laughed when he mentioned a book by German Cardinal Walter Kasper.

"I liked that book a lot but don't think I am trying to advertise books by my cardinals," he said.

Before he entered the tiny church of Santa Anna for the morning Mass, Francis stopped to greet well-wishers who had lined up outside a nearby Vatican gate.

He chatted and laughed with many of them before pointing to his black plastic wrist watch and saying: "It's almost 10 o'clock. I have to go inside to say Mass. They are waiting for me."

Inside, he wore the purple vestments of the liturgical season of Lent, which ends in two weeks on Easter Sunday.

At the end of the Mass, he waited outside the church and greeted people as they left the building, like a parish priest, asking many of them: "Pray for me".

His last words before he left the window were: "Have a nice Sunday and have a nice lunch".

Pope to meet Argentine president he clashed with

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Pope Francis' diplomatic skills are being put to the test in his first audience with a visiting head of state: Argentine president Cristina Fernandez, with whom he clashed over her socially liberal policies.

Fernandez calls on the former Archbishop of Buenos Aires Monday at his makeshift home, the Vatican hotel on the edge of the Vatican gardens, a day before she and other world leaders attend his installation Mass in St. Peter's Square.

Fernandez and her predecessor and late husband Nestor Kirchner defied church teaching to adopt a series of measures with popular backing, including mandatory sex education in schools, free distribution of contraceptives in public hospitals, and the right for transsexuals to change their official identities on demand. Argentina was the first Latin American country to legalize same-sex marriages.

How Does the PFCE Framework Assist with School Readiness?

How Does the PFCE Framework Assist with School Readiness? The Parent, Family, Community Engagement Framework was introduced by Head Start in 2011 as a set of technical assistance resources and research-based methods for implementing Head Start Performance Standards. The PFCE Framework is designed to be a system where agencies can self-assess their programs to identify weaknesses in programming, then provide the tools to help strengthen those areas. The framework itself is not mandated, but with the second round of recompetition already begun, the writing is on the wall that this framework could be the key to keeping a program off the chopping block.

The PFCE Framework works under the assumption that parent, family, and community engagement are the keys to school readiness and sustaining learning gains through third grade. In ?Bringing Parent, Family, and Community Framework to Your Program: Beginning a Self Assessment? OHS defines this engagement as:

?building relationships with families that support family well-being, strong parent-child relationships and ongoing learning and development of parents and children alike. It refers to the beliefs, attitudes, behaviors and activities of families that support their children?s positive development from early childhood through young adulthood. Family engagement happens in the home, early childhood program, school and community, and is a shared responsibility with all those who support children?s learning.

At the same time that OHS seeks to define engagement, it also admits that each family?s experience with HS/EHS is unique. As a result, the framework it meant to be fluid and dynamic. But it also recognizes that individualized attention with families can only be successful as long as strong, research-based program foundations are in place.

The framework outlines seven ?Family Engagement Outcomes? as the goals of a strong program:

? Family Well-being
? Parent-Child Relationships
? Families as Lifelong Educators
? Families as Learners
? Family Engagement in Transitions
? Family Connections to Peers and Community
? Families as Advocates and Leaders

In my opinion, part of what the PFCE Framework is trying to do is make the most of the short time we as Head Start teachers have with children and their families. Analysis of the Head Start Impact study has shown that parent involvement is one of the most enduring benefits of the Head Start program. But it?s more than just getting them involved, what can we do to make sure that their enduring involvement is as valuable as possible to their children for the future? If we can encourage parents and families to be lifelong educators or leaders in their communities, then their children will benefit long after they leave Head Start. Children will not only be ready for school, they?ll be ready for life.

At The Gravely Group, we encourage agencies to ask themselves, do you know where your program stands with Parent, Family, and Community Engagement? Have you done the assessment?

travel & leisure: Top Tips for Travelling with Babies

By Steve Alexander

Having a baby can sometimes put people off travelling, but this doesn't have to be the case. Whether you've got the one baby or a few children, there are a few tips to make travelling with the kids an absolute doddle.

A plane journey can often be quite uncomfortable, and your baby is sure to agree! In order to keep them at a comfortable temperature, think about layering up your baby in comfortable and loose clothing. Packing a blanket or a lightweight scarf from home will give them a familiar smell to help them settle on the plane.

When you arrive at your destination, hailing a local taxi or negotiating the local trains can be a hassle and time consuming, especially with a baby, so book your transfer before you travel. There are many different options available to you and it will make your lives much easier to pre-book a transfer to your hotel.

After you've arrived at your resort in Puerto del Carmen or anywhere else, it's time to start enjoying your holiday and to do this, preparation is key. Take a few moments to get everything sorted for the baby, even if it means missing out on moments in the sun. When travelling with a baby, a parasol is an absolute must along with a high factor SPF, lots of water, and plenty of shade.

You want your baby to enjoy their new surroundings and play, but safety must come first with a baby especially when the sun is strong. Pack a cooling spray, which can be purchased from many High Street stores, to spray onto your baby to cool them down when necessary. This is also a great time for teaching your baby how to swim and become acquainted with the water. Let them splash around with your supervision and they'll soon become a water baby.

Golf-South African Aiken soars to three-shot lead in India

NEW DELHI, March 16 | Sat Mar 16, 2013 5:54pm IST

NEW DELHI, March 16 (Reuters) - South African Thomas Aiken carded a blemish-free round of 10-under-par 62 to grab a commanding three-stroke lead after the third round of the Avantha Masters on Saturday.

The 29-year-old from Johannesburg, trailing by four at the halfway stage, hit eight birdies and an eagle to be 18-under 198 and move ahead of 36-hole joint-leader Liang Wenchong of China, who shot a 69 for outright second.

Thailand's big-hitting Kiradech Aphibarnrat (66) and Scotland's David Drysdale (68) were tied third, a further shot behind on 14-under.

Aiken started with a birdie on the first and a eagle on the second and never looked back from there.

"I concentrated very hard to play one shot at a time and it seemed to work," Aiken told the European Tour website (www.europeantour.com).

"I got off to a great start... holing a pitch shot on the second for eagle always helps.. and from then on I just stuck to my game plan. All in all I'm very pleased with the way I played."

Some scintillating iron play ensured that the South African, who briefly shared the lead with Kiradech, could set up more birdie opportunities.

"I've been playing very well the last four months and just haven't converted opportunities," said the world number 129, chasing a second European Tour win after his maiden victory in 2011.

"Fortunately this week I've converted a lot of the opportunities that I've had. The majority of them have gone in from inside ten feet and that's what makes the difference from a scoring point of view."

Former Asia number one Liang's round was spoiled by two bogeys when he missed a couple of short putts but he did not lose hope.

"The key is to stay patient," Liang said. "I'm just three shots back and I'm confident that the gap can be closed.

"Anything can happen in golf and I only need to believe that I can do it. Hopefully luck will play a part as well." (Writing by Sudipto Ganguly in Mumbai; editing by Tom Pilcher)

Tourist gang-raped in India

AP

A Swiss woman, center, who, according to police, was gang-raped by a group of eight men while touring by bicycle with her husband, is escorted by policewomen for a medical examination at a hospital in Gwalior, in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, Saturday, March 16, 2013.

A Swiss woman who was on a cycling trip in central India with her husband has been gang-raped by eight men, police said Saturday. The attack comes three months after the fatal gang-rape of a woman aboard a New Delhi bus outraged Indians.

Authorities detained and questioned 13 men in connection with the latest attack, which occurred Friday night as the couple camped out in a forest in Madhya Pradesh state after bicycling from the temple town of Orchha, local police officer R.K. Gurjar said.

The men beat the couple and gang-raped the woman, he said. They also stole the couple's mobile phone, a laptop computer and 10,000 rupees ($185).

The woman, 39, was treated at a hospital in the nearby city of Gwalior, Gurjar said.

A photo showed the woman walking while being escorted by police to the hospital. Her face was concealed with a hood, a common practice in India, where law does not allow rape victims to be identified publicly to protect them from the stigma attached to rape in the conservative country.

Police detained 13 men and questioned them, Gurjar said. Six of the men were released after questioning. No other details were immediately available.

Indian television stations showed scores of police searching the forest where the attack occurred.

Swiss Foreign Ministry spokesman Tilman Renz described the case as "deeply disturbing" and said Swiss diplomats were assisting the couple.

The diplomats called on Indian authorities "to do everything to quickly find the perpetrators so that they can be held accountable," Renz said in a statement.

Last month, the Swiss government issued a travel notice for India that included a warning about "increasing numbers of rapes and other sexual offenses" in the South Asian nation.

India has seen outrage and widespread protests against attacks on women since December's fatal gang-rape of a young woman on a moving bus in New Delhi, the capital. The crime horrified Indians and set off nationwide protests about India's treatment of women and spurred the government to hurry through a new package of laws to protect them.

One of six suspects in the December attack was found dead in a New Delhi jail this past week. Authorities said he hanged himself, but his family and lawyer insisted foul play was involved. A magistrate is investigating. Four other men and a juvenile remain on trial for the attack.

For those hit by natural disasters in 2012, IRS can help

The Rockaways in New York were hard hit by Superstorm Sandy, and many of the homes were destroyed. Residents will be able to deduct what they lost.

By Cynthia Ramnarace, Reuters

ROCKAWAY BEACH, New York - It's March, and life has yet to return to normal for those of us whose lives were upended by Superstorm Sandy. We are still waiting on insurance settlements and overworked contractors, and trying not to hyperventilate as we see how much Sandy has cost in everything from drywall to new sofas to extra restaurant meals.

There is some consolation: We might be able to recoup some losses at tax time. Residents in areas that suffered through one of the 10 federally declared disaster areas in 2012 can deduct the value of their lost property on their tax returns.

For this reason, the 177,000 people in the Sandy corridor and some 64,000 other storm victims might actually be looking forward to dealing with the Internal Revenue Service this tax season. But get ready, because like all things storm-related, there's going to be lots of paperwork - and tissues - involved.

"It's so emotional," says Judy Strauss, an enrolled agent (IRS-licensed preparer) in Cobleskill, N.Y. "But people just have to take a deep breath and do it. I tell people to keep a piece of paper by the bed. Every time you wake up in the middle of the night and remember something else you've lost, write it down."

Timing your return
If you were in a declared federal disaster area, you can file an amended return for the 2011 tax year and tuck your Sandy losses into that, or you can simply claim them on your 2012 return. (You can find a complete list of the qualifying storms and areas at the FEMA website.)?

"Choose whichever will give you a better tax situation," says David Tolleth, an enrolled agent in Holmdel, N.J. That's typically the year in which your income was lower, because under the IRS formula, the less you earn, the more losses you can deduct.

You may want to file as soon as possible, but wait until your final insurance settlement comes in, so you can properly account for your losses.

"You need to get appraisals," says Tolleth. "You've got to know if you're going to rebuild, and what those expenses will be. And then you need to know how much insurance you're going to get. And if you don't know those things, then you can't file."

You could end up owing money back to the IRS if you claim too many losses prematurely, he said.

If necessary, you can request an extension so your 2012 return won't be due until October 15; you have until then to decide whether you would rather declare your Sandy losses against your 2011 return.

If you've had extensive casualty losses, you might be owed more in refunds than you paid in taxes. In that case, you can apply those extra losses as far back as 2009 or carry them over to future years. A good tax adviser can help you figure out which would save you more.

What is deductible? Answer: Every spoon
Losses that are not reimbursed by insurance can be deducted using IRS Form 4684: Casualties and Thefts. This includes loss of personal property (many flood policies did not cover items such as furniture and clothing) as well as a decrease in the value of your home - something an appraiser would have to calculate.?

You can also deduct items excluded by your flood and homeowner's insurance such as the cost of landscaping improvements, lawn furniture, decks, fences and swimming pools.

Using photographs, receipts or, if necessary, just your memory, make a list of every item lost. Jot down every spoon, dish towel, bottle of makeup and prescription medication. Show the original cost of the item and what it would be worth if you would have tried to sell it the day before the storm.

"Ask yourself, 'What could I sell it for if I sold it on Craigslist?'" says Tolleth.

Include on your list items for which you received only partial insurance reimbursement. For example, if you lost a car in the storm and it was valued at $10,000 but you received only $5,000 from your insurance, you can include the extra $5,000 in your disaster loss statement.

Anything that has been paid for by insurance or FEMA is not deductible, nor is cash that was destroyed in the home. Also, improvements you make to the home during rebuilding cannot be claimed on your return.

"If you had a 1950s kitchen and now you're putting in a 2012 kitchen, you're improving, so you have to go back to what the 1950s one would have cost you to replace," says Strauss.

Less than a full loss
Once you add up everything you've lost, the IRS requires you to do some math to figure out your actual deduction.

For example, let's say your total documented loss, not covered by insurance, was $20,000. Your adjusted gross income was $100,000. First, everyone has to subtract $100 from the $20,000. Consider that a sort of IRS deductible. That leaves you with $19,900. Then you have to subtract 10 percent of your gross income - in this case, $10,000. (That's why choosing to file in the tax year in which your income was lower could save you some money.)

Your casualty deduction will then be $9,900, saving you roughly $2,475 in federal taxes if you're in the 25-percent bracket.

In other discouraging news, you may actually end up with a bigger tax bill than you were expecting anyway. Congress liberalized hardship withdrawals from retirement accounts for Sandy sufferers, but if you withdrew money from your 401(k) or tax-deferred individual retirement account and didn't replace it, you may owe income taxes and a 10 percent penalty on the hardship withdrawal - adding insult to hardship.

(AP) ? Horns honked, percussion pulsed and school kids squealed. Miami can make quite a din when the Dominicans win.

The visiting team on the scoreboard, the Dominican Republic made itself at home by beating the United States 3-1 Thursday night to earn a berth in the final round of the World Baseball Classic.

Pinch-hitter Erick Aybar singled home Nelson Cruz with the go-ahead run in the ninth for the Dominicans, who improved to 5-0. The Dominican Republic is assured of a spot in the semifinals beginning Sunday in San Francisco, where two-time defending champion Japan and the Netherlands have already advanced.

The United States must now face Puerto Rico on Friday night, with the winner earning a trip to San Francisco and the loser being eliminated. Ryan Vogelsong will pitch for the Americans against Nelson Figueroa.

Playing the U.S. team for the first time ever in the WBC, the Dominicans drew raucous support all night, especially in a noisy ninth.

"No doubt it's the best atmosphere I ever played in," said Cruz, who has twice reached the World Series. "Thanks to the fans, we had extra motivation you don't have every day."

With the score 1-all, Cruz led off with a double against Craig Kimbrel (0-1), then took third on a groundout. Aybar singled sharply and ran to first with his index finger raised as his teammates poured out of the dugout to greet Cruz crossing the plate.

Aybar's hit came one pitch after a called strike two left him irate.

"An umpire makes a mistake," Aybar said. "What I did was forget about it and make contact."

Until Aybar's hit, the Dominicans were 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position.

Aybar stole second and scored on a two-out single by Jose Reyes.

"They beat our closer," U.S. manager Joe Torre said. "They beat a great one. You tip your hat to them."

Former Miami Marlin Hanley Ramirez silenced jeers from the crowd with a home run in the second inning for the other Dominican run.

Pedro Strop (3-0) pitched a scoreless eighth. Fernando Rodney, the fifth Dominican pitcher, threw a perfect ninth to complete a six-hitter for his fourth save. He has yet to allow a hit in 4 1-3 innings.

With the final out, several teammates joined Rodney in his familiar arrow-shooting ritual. The victory left Dominican manager Tony Pena choking back tears.

"I feel so emotional," he said in the interview room over the clamor of partying Dominicans on a nearby plaza. "Today was the battle of two titans."

The retractable roof was closed, which reinforced the sound of the noisemakers favored by Dominican spectators. Their racket more than matched the cheers of U.S. fans in the crowd of 34,366.

There was plenty of flag-waving, even by the players. During the game someone gave the Americans a U.S. flag to hang in their dugout.

But the U.S. team was without slugger David Wright, scratched shortly before the game because of sore ribs.

Both starting pitchers benefited from umpire Angel Hernandez's large strike zone, and they cooled off two teams that came into the game batting over .300.

R.A. Dickey, the NL Cy Young Award winner last year, gave up one run and struck out four in five innings. Minnesota Twins right-hander Samuel Deduno allowed one run and struck out seven, mostly on curves, in four innings for the Dominican Republic.

Deduno walked Eric Hosmer with the bases loaded to score the lone U.S. run in the opening inning. Deduno then went to 3-0 on Adam Jones but struck him out on a 3-2 breaking pitch to escape the jam.

Deduno also struck out Hosmer looking to end the third, then walked to the dugout shouting with both arms raised. He was just as demonstrative after fanning Jimmy Rollins to end the fourth.

Strop pounded his chest when he kept the score tied by getting three outs in the eighth.

"There's passion on both sides," Torre said. "It's just showed a little different. It's nothing we didn't expect."

Ramirez, traded by the Marlins during their dismal 2012 season, drew boos when he batted in the second. He responded by pulling a knuckler into the beer garden to make the score 1-all.

Enhance Your Home With These Improvement Ideas ? DFW Design ...

Do-it-yourself home improvements build character. Home improvements are so desirable because they allow one to focus on detail. To avoid intimidation, read this article in full.

Anytime you make major changes to your home in the way of adding something, you need to contact your city government to see if you need a permit. Putting in a new garage and installing a pool are just two examples of this. If you aren?t aware of the regulations in your area concerning structural changes to your property, it would be best to get a professional to help you. It may save you money and prevent you from making mistakes.

Do you simply not have enough time to care for your lawn? Do you not have enough money to pay someone else to maintain it for you? If so, then you need a yard that is very low maintenance. Avoid grass and instead install gravel and plants which need little care. This will reduce the maintenance costs that you have to pay.

Take a walk around your house to look at the foundation and identify cracks where cold air might seep in during the winter. During the winter months, bugs and rodents will seek refuge in warmer spots. If you seal up the points of entry into your home, you can help yourself to remain free from unwanted pests.

Make sure you put in some time and hard work for decorating the inside and outside of your home. Home improvement is a general term that includes how the home actually looks. You want to make sure the effort you put into improving it really shows.

It takes a lot of blood, sweat and tears to get a home renovation project done. There are home improvement projects out there to suit any homeowner?s skill-set. These tips can help anyone ranging from a beginner to an expert.

CERN release preliminary results: particle looking 'more and more like a Higgs boson'

CERN's latest update to its god particle project is that the new particle that it was able to pick up is behaving "more and more like a Higgs boson." The team isn't being particularly specific here, as its not certain just yet whether it's detected a 'standard model' particle or the lightest of several possible bosons predicted in other spin-off theories. Researchers are referencing the interactions of the particle (particularly its spin, or lack off) as the main reason why they reckon they're dealing with a genuine Higgs boson and work will now focus on exactly what kind of boson they've managed to snag.

Samsung Galaxy S 4 wireless charging pad and S Health scale hands-on

Samsung Galaxy S 4 accessories

No phone launch is complete without a few accessories added to the mix. Samsung had a whole bunch to announce alongside its Galaxy S 4, but only a few were on hand to check out up close and personal. We did, however, find a nice surprise hiding under those glossy white table covers -- a wireless charging pad. Yes, it turns out the the GS 4 does in fact have Qi wireless charging capabilities. Provided its available in your region and your carrier chooses to support it. The charging pad itself has a glossy plastic base that matches the phone, but there's a nice rubbery gray top that keeps the handset from sliding around too much while it's juicing up.

We also got to check out the companion wireless scale that looks quite a bit like the Fitbit Aria. Though, with a square LCD and a healthy-sized Samsung logo on it. The scale is just one part of the larger S Health equation which also includes a Jawbone Up-like monitor (S Band), which was sadly nowhere to be found in the demo pit. The scale of course sync with the baked in S Health app over Bluetooth, which makes it quite a bit easier to track how that diet of yours is going. In addition to simply tracking your total poundage, there will be bands for tracking heart rate and the S 4's various sensor can help judge the comfort level of your environment. The requisite glut of photos can be found below in the gallery.

Check out our event hub for all the action from Samsung's Galaxy S 4 event.
